The South Africa Council of Shopping Centres has awarded its inaugural “Young Achiever Award” to Jason McCormick (37), the MD of McCormick Property Development.

The award was handed out at the 20th annual South African Council of Shopping Centre Congress hosted at the Sandton Convention Centre in September. It seeks to acknowledge leaders in the industry under the age of 40 “who in a short period of time have achieved much in their career” and who have made a “substantial contribution to the Shopping Centre Industry in South Africa”.

“Whilst I am incredibly honoured to have received this prestigious award, I believe that it is more a recognition of the incredible amount of hard work that our team has put in over the past few decades. I am incredibly blessed to have worked side by side with my father (John McCormick – SACSC Retail Pioneer of the 20th Century) for the past 15 years in the industry and to have learned his values of honesty, integrity and “leaving enough on the plate for the next guy” that has allowed us to grow our business through positive word-of-mouth referrals.

I am also incredibly blessed to have a phenomenal team working with me currently, without whose focus, dedication and energy, we would never have grown in the manner that we have, nor have developed new malls at the rate at which we have – especially in these trying economic times. As such, I see myself as nothing more than a figurehead to receive this award on behalf of all who have come before me, and for all those that are now working beside me in “Pioneering African Development.” Thus, even whilst my name sits alone on the award, my team knows that their names lie alongside it!”
