With the installation of bulk services now nearing completion the ground has finally been set for the development of the long-awaited Mall de Moçambique. The Mall has started to take shape as the cornerstone development within the 54 hectare Cidadela de Matola (CdM) mixed use development in Matola, Mozambique. This development will house a 52 000m2 regional mall which will be the largest shopping destination in Mozambique (larger than both the Riverside and Ilanga Malls in Nelspruit) as well as offices, residences, hotels and entertainment facilities offering a combination of convenience and choice for shoppers right in the heart of Matola.

The development is situated at the intersection of the N4 freeway from Komatipoort/Nelspruit and the N2 from Namaacha, Swaziland – the most prime location in the rapidly-expanding hub of Matola.

The iconic Mall will provide an all-encompassing tenant mix including fashion, beauty, entertainment and food. With space for more than 100 shops in the first phase, the Mall de Moçambique will cater for both local and international visitors and promises to be a convenient, entertaining retail hub for the whole family. It is envisaged that the mall will attract in excess of 50% international brands from Europe as well as South Africa and the Middle East, bringing a truly international flavour to the region, whilst still catering for local traders and retaining a proudly Mozambican identity.

The mall will be serviced with 2 000 parking bays, providing ample parking for shoppers travelling to the Mall in their own vehicles, as well as having a public transport hub within the development.

Cidadela da Matola development, which incorporates the entire site once used by Radio Mozambique will provide various services and amenities to the nearly 900,000 population of Matola as well as the entire region of the Province of Maputo. Other envisioned facilties for the project include two hotels, a casino, a government precinct (pubic services), multiple sites for commercial offices as well as three apartment tower blocks that will bring modern New-York-styled living to the heart of the precinct.
Having received all relevant construction approvals and licenses, the developers engaged WBHO Projects Mozambique Limitada to install the Civil Engineering Services who have been working on the site and surrounding areas since July 2014. The Civil Engineering Services Contract, comprises of Bulk Earthworks, Storm Water Systems, Roadworks, Electrical, Gas and Water Services as well as a high-speed optic fibre data network to service the CdM precinct development, is scheduled for completion during the second quarter of 2015.

Construction of Mall de Moçambique will commence upon completion of the enginnering services and is expected to take approximately 2 years to complete. Split over two levels, the Mall will take design cues from the latest international retail developments and trends. Shoppers will be spoilt for choice by multiple supermarkets, a wide array of local and international fashion brands and restaurants. There will be a large entertainment node comprising a cinema multiplex, an arcade gaming centre with a ten-pin bowling alley amongst others attractions. The overall development will ensure both a world-class shopping experience and fun for the entire family unlike anything Mozambique have ever seen before!

Jason McCormick, Managing Director of McCormick Property states that: “Throughout all of McCormick Property’s 56 developments completed in South Africa, we have noticed how malls and retail spaces become catalytic growth points, providing a nexus of community activity. CdM, as Mozambique’s premier mixed use development, will go above and beyond anything developed in Mozambique to date and will boast an enticing mix of new industries joined together within a single modern, high-tech precinct.

Linked to the Mall by wide streets and landscaped footpaths, the Commercial and Government Office Parks, Private Hospital and towering apartment blocks seamlessly fit together to create the ultimate example of the “live, work, play” development ideology that is being followed the world over.

Together with our local partners SIF, this development will be a shining example of a modern era of Mozambicans doing world class things for the future of all of Mozambique!”

Cidadela da Matola and Mall de Moçambique are on track to become the iconic landmarks that Mozambique has been waiting for!
